| Cameraman,
filmmaker and educator Thierry Pathe, a grandson of film pioneer Charles
Pathe, died Saturday, April 6 (2002), in New York City of cancer.
He was 61.
Remembered
as a charismatic and inspiring teacher and mentor to numerous now-established
auteurs(including Martin Scorsese, Angelina Jolie, Ethan and Joel
Cohen and Susan Seidelman) he taught the nuts and bolts of filmmaking
to hundreds of students in the Department of Film, Video and Broadcasting
at NYUs School of Continuing Education (recently renamed the
School of Continuing and Professional Studies) from 1971 to 2000.
In addition,
he served as the departments film coordinator for the better
part of three decades and established links between NYU and the
citys labs and equipment houses.
After leaving
NYU, he worked for LOrage, where he was cinematographer, lighting
and directing consultant for Growing Down in Brooklyn,
starring Tina Louise, which appeared on U.S. TV. He also produced
Hooch with Danny Aiello and Gil Gerard.
He previously
was d.p. on The Cauldron with Boris Karloff and Viveca
Lindfors as well as the Batman TV series.
Additionally
he directed commercials for Rolex.
Two films he
produced and/or directed - but which were never released - were
The Young and the Dead and Toot Suite.
He trained
as a cameraman in the U.S. Air Force before branching out into nearly
all the technical aspects of film and television production.
Born Thierry
Charles Franc in Laval, France, he was brought to New York. A naturalized
U.S. citizen, he adopted the surname of his maternal grandfather
as an adult.
He is survived
by a son and a half sister.
